There’s nothing quite like a refreshing piece of fruit on a hot summer day or the perfect grilled vegetable to go with your BBQ’d meal. Thanks to our modern supply chains, finding virtually any kind of fruit and vegetable year-round is extremely simple, but we recommend going back to basics this summer by shopping in-season. Why should you shop in-season, you ask? When a fruit or vegetable is in peak supply, its price will be much lower (which means more savings!)

Here’s a list of the fruits and vegetables that are in-season during summer to help you shave down that bill and get the best quality produce at the right time.

Berries

Juicy berries including strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries hit their prime in the summertime. Get creative and try mixing your berries into smoothies or popsicles for a refreshing summer treat. Fun Fact: The little yellow specks on the outside of strawberries aren’t actually seeds. In fact, they are called achene and are considered by botanists to be tiny, little fruit.

Cucumber

Although you may eat cucumbers all year long, summer is when they are at their best. Their fresh, crisp taste makes cucumbers a great summer snack. Have you tried adding cucumber slices to your water? No? What are you waiting for…you can bring that spa feeling right to your home — you’ll thank us later.

Fun Fact: You can eliminate bad breath by taking a slice of cucumber and pressing it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds. The phytochemicals will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

Although mangos grow in tropical climates, meaning they aren’t local, they are still considered an in-season fruit during the summer. Mangoes are great on their own and can also be used in salsa, salad, and smoothies, bringing a tropical flavor to any meal.

Fun fact: Peppers are actually fruits because they are produced from a flowering plant and contain seeds. Most people think of them as vegetables.

A stone fruit is any fruit that has a pit enclosed by flesh or pulp. These fruits include peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, and apricots.

Stone fruits are a refreshing snack, and can also be used to create sauces and drinks, or can even be cooked on the grill to make for a tasty dessert.
