Why should we care about a food's seasonality? Two reasons: taste and price. When produce is harvested in its optimal season, its flavor and quality is much better. In addition, when a fruit or vegetable is in peak supply, its price will be much lower (which means more savings!).

All varieties of winter squash, which includes butternut squash and the infamous pumpkin, are in season starting in September through the winter months. Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes
This versatile vegetable is planted in the spring and harvested in the fall. Although certain supermarket apple varieties are available year-round, apple season is between August and early November. This is when you’ll see seasonal apples like the HoneyCrisp, Granny Smith, and more popping up at your local grocery store or farmer’s market for a limited time.

Bartlett pears are the most common pear variety in North America, and are available from August until December. Other pear varieties hit the market in September, making this an essential autumn fruit to add to your grocery list.

Broccoli and Cauliflower
Yes, these cruciferous vegetables have a season, and it’s between fall and spring. Not only will you see a price decrease on broccoli and cauliflower, but you’ll notice that they’ll taste sweeter as a result of being harvested in cooler months.
