What exactly is Hygge? Simply put, the Danish word is best described as enjoying life’s simple pleasures. As it turns out, the Danes are serious self-care pros, since Hygge as a concept and lifestyle dates all the way back to the 18th Century and has now become a fundamental part of their culture. Denmark experiences some of the darkest and coldest winters in the world, yet it’s still ranked as one of the top three happiest countries in the world – we say, do as the Danish do!

We’re all for finding more ways to relax on a budget after a stressful day, but what makes this artform so appealing? Small effort, BIG return. Some of our very own Flippers decided to jump on the Hygge bandwagon and pulled together a list of hyggelig (it’s a word, trust us) things to help keep your spirits up during winter.

Find your nook

Since  many of us are spending most of our time indoors, find the coziest spot in your home and make it your own. You don’t have to spend a lot of money by buying trendy decor, because Hygge is all about making a space feel welcoming and warm, so whatever that looks like for you – go for it!

Make your space cozy

Once you’ve found your space, making it cozy is key. The best way to do this (especially on those particularly cold evenings) is to put in some soft and fluffy cushions along with the most comfortable blanket you have to snuggle up with. There are few things more hygge than cuddling up under a blanket with your favorite book and warm beverage or watching some Netflix with a nice big bowl of popcorn. Remember, it’s all about what’s most relaxing to you!

Let there be light

Hygge is big on lighting because it can make all the difference when it comes to creating a warm little space just for you. We recommend candles. There is nothing like the soft and kind glow of a candle, when it comes to creating a pool of natural light around your living space. These are a must to add that pleasant touch to your hygge decor. Several candles are perfect to set that warm radiance to help you relax on your own or socialize with family and friends. You could also try twinkly lights which give off a softer light without being too overwhelming.

Find the perfect tune

Music is a big factor that helps set the tone for any situation and Hygge is no different. You can find tunes that  go with pretty much any mood you’re in. Create a playlist on Spotify or YouTube that can be used as the perfect background to help you blissfully drift away into a calm relaxed state.

Bring the outside in

Too cold to go out for a walk? That’s fine, bring some elements from the outside into your space. If you’re a fan of nature, bring in a potted plant or two. Not only will they help clean the air, but they also look pretty. We all know the great benefits of sunlight, but for those particularly dull days, a sun lamp (or light box) that mimics natural outdoor light can help you through those dark patches. If you happen to have a fireplace, there’s nothing like a big pile of firewood, ready to be thrown into a roaring open fire.

Mindful indulgence

Hygge is all about indulging in the good things in life, and eating your favorite comfort food is an ideal way to feed your hygge state. Hygge food just refers to eating delicious, comforting, and hearty food or beverages. So whatever your fancy, be it a warm bowl of soup, chicken casserole or your favourite cookies, don’t hold back. We’ve got some great cookie recipes from our very own flippers that you could try too. If you’re looking to keep it light, cuddling up with a rich, warm cup of something soothing can also go a long way to perfectly contented bliss.

While it may be hard to carve out time every day to practice Hygge, incorporating a few of these practices should help you begin your journey. After all, enjoying a balanced, healthy lifestyle will help you embrace life which is what Hygge is all about.
