A Savings Expert’s Guide for Back to School Shopping and Beyond

A Savings Expert’s Guide for Back to School Shopping and Beyond

September 03, 2019

With back to school season now in full swing, it’s the perfect time to stock up on all the great sales. But don’t just shop for your children — take advantage of the back to school sales to buy discounted office supplies and electronics you might need to replace around your home or office. Savings expert, Lauren Greutman tells us exactly what we should shop for this time of year, along with other hot tips to make the most out of upcoming deals.

Customize Your Shopping List

When it comes to back to school shopping, Lauren recommends gathering a stockpile of leftover supplies from the previous year. By seeing what you already have, you’ll avoid overspending on duplicates and stretch your budget to the max. Then, compare the supplies you have with the official school supplies list and create your own list from there.

If you haven’t already, download and use the Flipp app to search for all of the items on your list. Add these into Flipp’s in-app shopping list and see the Flipp magic happen as the app automatically shows you every store that has that item on sale!

Divide and Conquer

Try to shop at the least amount of stores possible while keeping in mind that you are looking for the best price. It’s not worth your time to drive all across town just to save $0.10 on glue sticks, as it isn’t really saving you money in the long run. However, if you have a shopping partner, our savings expert recommends that you divide and conquer. This is especially easy if you share your Flipp shopping list with your shopping partner, so you can both add items or check them off your shared list.

Buy These Now

Beyond the notebooks, gluesticks, and pencils, you should take advantage of back to school deals on electronics. There are a multitude of deals on printers, computers, and computer accessories (keyboard, mouse, etc.) that you probably won’t see until much later in the year. Other household supplies you should stock up on are: printer paper, tissues, and disinfecting wipes. It’s also a great time to shop for bedding, towels, and storage containers, as these are typically on sale for students going off to college.

Buy These Later

Backpacks are one of the back to school essentials that you’re better off buying later. The truth is that these will actually go on sale after the back to school rush, so wait until mid September to get your money’s worth. Tablets are also an exception in the electronics department, given that there are better deals around Black Friday. If you can, you should also wait to buy clothing, since you will find greater discounts in October during Columbus Day sales.

Think Beyond Back to School

Supplies like crayons, paint sets, and markers won’t go on sale throughout the year. That’s why you should stock up on these now, and save them to use later for birthday party goody bags or stocking stuffers during the holidays. Storage bins and organizing supplies are also on sale, so consider grabbing these now so you don’t have to pay full price later.
